Education in Canada has been progressing; albeit at varying rates, over the last number of years. With a quick glance at any school, one can observe a classroom with students in VR goggles, and a neighbouring room with a chalkboard and a majority of sleeping “learners”.

A staple of many progressive classrooms in colleges and universities has been the use of Audience Response Systems. From its origins as a basic tool for engagement, it has evolved with educators into a comprehensive tool to use as an assessment piece, motivational driver and as an agent of unbiased feedback for your betterment.

In order to avoid becoming static, ARS developers like Turning Technologies have worked closely with presenters in the education corporate and government space; on ways to incorporate various pedagogies into their system. In this presentation we will discuss three innovative components of new-age Audience Response Systems; and how, any professor; regardless of how they teach, can implement these underlying rules to aid in providing a positive, immersive learning experience for their students.
  • The benefits of transitioning from a mostly summative assessment model to an active, formative one.
  • How to use competitions and gamification to inspire learners to become owners of their own learning
  • How to insight honest, unbiased feedback from students during the learning process, to allow you to make the appropriate changes for your current audience.
Through the exploration of these three components, we will see how these systems have innovated the classroom, and what trends have been implemented for the betterment of education as a whole.
