UBC’s Undergraduate Medical Program is distributed over four teaching sites across British Columbia. Educational technologies play an important role in making this type of distributed education possible and successful, while also significantly changing the learning environment for both teachers and learners. Our discussion will focus on video-conference tools used in tutorial environments and video-broadcasting in the lecture setting, and the impact they’ve had on teaching and learning. These technologies have forced teachers and staff who support teaching to re-think their approach to lectures and small group tutorials. By exploring successful and unsuccessful case studies in the tutorial environment, the resistance by Faculty and Staff to using video technology will be examined and how this is addressed. This presentation will discuss the logistics of training for faculty and the challenges of adoption of best practices, including the important aspect of setting expectations of the technology including preparing for when it fails. Using evidence from case studies, student assessment data, and current, relevant literature, the teacher as well as the student perspective will be considered in the context of broadcast lecture environments. Technologies often have visible and latent impacts: visible- the learning environment is expanded geographically, latent- students no longer need to attend lectures and attendance is dropping. We will discuss the successes and challenges of video conference/broadcasting technologies and look to future solutions to enhance teaching and learning.
